There are two main types of cocker spaniel - working and show. Cockers were originally bred for woodcock hunting, hence the name cocker. They are compact, sturdy and a well balanced breed which are alert, enthusiastic and extremely good natured; making them an ideal family companion as well as good working dog.

They are relatively easy to train and pick up the basics really quickly due to their intelligence and eagerness to please. They are one of the most loving friendly and easygoing breeds who will love you forever given the chance.

They have a very sociable nature so love children and playing with other dogs, as well as playing games and challenges like agility.

They are never phased from hunting threw hedges, brambles, marshland and swimming to find their trophy.

Cockers are just as at home in the water as on land, so be prepared as they will find every muddy puddle, ditch, stream, fish pond that they can! So be warned you will never come back from a walk with a clean dog!

However, working cockers are slightly easier to groom than show cockers due to their shorter coats but they still need regular brushing just like all other dogs.
